Used Cars 101: What to Look for When Buying a Used Car

If you’re shopping for a used car, you need to know exactly what you’re getting into. Understanding the overall condition of the pre-owned vehicle you’re looking at is a great place to start. Here is your guide to inspecting the vehicle:

Exterior

Walk around the car and keep an eye out for the following:

• Misaligned Panels and Gaps: Indicates that the vehicle either needs repair or was not repaired correctly after an impact.
• Cracked or Chipped Glass: Even the smallest cracks or nicks can become a much larger problem if filled with moisture and could shatter if that moisture freezes and expands.
• Turn Signals and Headlights: Test all exterior lights to make sure they are functioning properly.
• Trunk, Hood & Doors: Check that the hinges are sturdy and operating smoothly. Also, take a peek inside the trunk for any signs of water damage.

Suspension

Make sure the vehicle is parked on level ground, then firmly bounce each corner of the car. Each corner should bounce only once; if it continues to bounce multiple times, that indicates a need for new shock absorbers. Lastly, pull up on both front tires. They should feel completely stable—any clunking or ticking sounds indicate loose or damaged components.

Taking a Look Under the Hood

There’s a lot to see under the hood, but a quick check involves feeling the rubber hoses attached to the engine. The rubber should feel firm yet pliable. If it feels rock hard or mushy, the hose will need to be replaced soon.

Under the Car

Most shoppers skip checking underneath the car, but these simple checks shouldn't be overlooked:

• Tailpipe: Inspect the inside of the tailpipe. While dry, dark grey soot is normal, black greasy residue is a sign of burning oil, which points to major engine issues.
• Fluid Leaks: Look at the ground under the vehicle for any fresh oil drips, or green/red fluid leaks.
• The Chassis: Inspect the frame underneath to make sure there are no cracks, heavy rust, or bends.
• Check for Crumpling: Look under the vehicle—especially below the trunk area—for metal that appears crumpled like an accordion or pulled straight. This is a clear indicator of past collision damage.

Interior

Checking the cabin is easier since you're familiar with everyday interior features:

• Roof Liner: Check for water stains or sagging material, which indicates current or past roof leaks.
• Seals & Weatherstripping: Inspect the rubber seals along the doors, windows, and sunroof to ensure they are intact and flexible.
• Test the Heat & A/C: Turn both the heater and air conditioning up to max power. Note not only if they work, but how quickly they reach full temperature and airflow.
