Trim Levels (Exterior)
The 2025 Explorer comes in four trims: the Active, ST-Line, Platinum, and ST. All models feature a reworked front with a bold grille, LED lights, and reshaped air inlets that give the SUV an aggressive stance. Dimensions measure 198.8 inches long, 89.3 inches wide, 69.9 inches tall, with 7.9 inches of ground clearance.
The Active gets 18-inch alloy wheels, the ST-Line steps up to 20-inch alloys, and the Platinum offers new 21-inch wheels that'll turn heads at stoplights. The ST-Line, ST, and Platinum have the option of a stylish black roof for a two-tone effect. An optional dual-panel moonroof brightens the interior, flooding the cabin with natural light.
Engine (Power)
Most 2025 Explorers pack a spirited 2.3-liter turbo four-cylinder with 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Standard in the Active, ST-Line, and Platinum trims, it offers plenty of punch for daily driving without guzzling fuel.
For those who want more muscle, the ST boasts a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 with 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque, also optional for the Platinum. Both engines pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive comes standard, but all-wheel drive is available across the board for those who regularly face rough weather or dirt roads.
Performance
The Explorer moves with purpose. The 2.3-liter turbo hits 60 mph in 6 seconds flat, while the ST's V-6 cuts that to 5.1 seconds — impressive for a family hauler. Every model can tow up to 5,000 pounds with the standard Class III Towing package, easily handling boats, campers, or trailers without breaking a sweat.
Ford's Terrain Management System offers modes for every situation: normal, sport, tow/haul, eco, sand, and mud/ruts. Each adjusts throttle, shifting, and stability settings to match conditions. While it won't tackle extreme trails, it can confidently handle family camping trips or beach excursions. The balanced suspension delivers comfort on highways but stays composed when roads get twisty.
Interior
Inside the 2025 Explorer, a 13.2-inch touchscreen dominates the dash alongside a crisp 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The Digital Experience software offers Google Maps integration and app compatibility without being overwhelming.
Storage is impressive: 18.2 cubic feet behind the third row, 47.9 cubic feet behind the second, and a whopping 87.8 cubic feet with both rows folded. Higher trims add a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen system, while the Platinum brings multi-contour massage seats. Soft-touch materials, sound insulation, and optional ambient lighting make for a cabin that feels genuinely premium.
Safety Features
All 2025 Explorer models come with Ford's Co-Pilot360, which features automatic emergency braking that detects pedestrians, lane-keeping that nudges you back on track, blind-spot alerts that work as an extra set of eyes, and adaptive cruise with stop-and-go that makes traffic jams less stressful and long drives more relaxing.
Higher trims offer BlueCruise, Ford's hands-free driving tech that works on over 130,000 miles of mapped highways across North America. It changes lanes and adjusts positioning as needed. Auto-dimming high beams, a 360-degree camera, intersection assist, and evasive steering assist round out the protection.
