Sedan Buying Guide

When car shopping, many people ask, “is this the car for me?”  Well, what does being “right” really mean?  Can I truly afford this car?  Does this car serve all of my utilitarian needs? Is this a car that I like the look of or want to be seen in?

We all think it, even if we don’t say it out loud. In terms of both your time and money, a car is a huge investment - it needs to be something that works for you, financially, practically, but also aesthetically. You’ll have to look at your own car every time you walk up to it, don’t you want to like what you see?  And when you arrive somewhere, the first impression of you is arriving in your car.  That’s important!

Let’s take a look at the variety of Ford sedans and what each style has to offer.

For the sake of simplicity, let’s accept a sedan as the following:  A vehicle with three main compartments:

  • engine
  • passenger
  • luggage

whereas hatchbacks generally feature folding seats to increase luggage space. Many sedans also come as a coupe or a hatchback, meaning it either has two or five doors (the trunk of a hatchback is qualified as a door), but a typical sedan has four.

Let’s break that down even further into different classes:  Small, Medium and Large.  Small sedans can sometimes be classified as compact and even subcompact cars.  Subcompact and compact cars are most at home in the city, dipping through downtown streets while fitting into even the tightest parking spaces –  or ‘kind of’ parking spaces. This kind of agility, when combined with the best fuel economy of non-electric or hybrid cars, makes them an attractive option to young professionals, or even to some families as a secondary commuter car.  Small sedans also have a very attainable price tag, with models like the Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus starting in the 15s and 16s.

Mid-size Sedans used to be America’s Family car before our fascination with gas guzzling SUVs was born. Before that, It was normal for most families to have a mid-sized sedan in their driveway.  The mid-size sedan takes a step above the commuter cars and offers a more spacious cabin, and more sophisticated available options – as well as suitable cargo space. The go to mid-size Ford sedan is the 2019 Ford Fusion.

And finally, Large, or Full-Size sedans provide your family the most cabin space, cargo room for their things and power to move it all with confidence.  Make no mistake, this isn’t the boat your grandfather used to drive - modern full-size sedans have been updated with more than just luxury – they’re also fun to drive.

While most people think of Sedans as just that - Sedans, there are many different variations of car in each of these classes. No matter what it is that you’re looking for, no matter your lifestyle or where you live, if a sedan is what you want, there’s something out there that fits you.
